The activities of the Department of Neurological and Psychiatric Sciences at the University of Florence are focused on basic and clinical research in the field of a number of neurological diseases such as stroke, dementia and multiple sclerosis.
The multidisciplinary Stroke Research Group of the Department includes:

- Stroke physicians
- Neuroepidemiologists
- Statisticians
- Psychologists
- Rehabilitation medicine specialists
Main interests in the area of stroke research are:
- Epidemiology
- Risk factors
- Primary and secondary prevention
- Clinical presentation, including stroke subtypes
- Therapy and outcome
- Social and demographic factors
- Costs
- Educational aspects, including stroke awareness.
The Department is also involved in research regarding epidemiology of age-related diseases e.g. dementia (including vascular dementia) and mild cognitive impairment, Parkinson's disease, peripheral neuropathy, cardiovascular diseases, and in the definition and impact of white matter age-related changes.
